New World Screwworm Workshop – August 15, 2026
July 1, 2026
Dear SACPA Members,
I hope everyone is doing well.
Over the past several months, SACPA has been closely monitoring New World screwworm activity as confirmed cases have begun appearing in the United States. As a result of these initial confirmed cases, the SACPA Board of Directors immediately began organizing a New World screwworm educational workshop to help prepare Arizona’s livestock industry.
We are pleased to announce that the workshop has now been finalized. Thanks to the outstanding partnership and support of the Arizona State Veterinarian’s Office and the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, the workshop will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the University of Arizona Meat Laboratory.
To better serve our ranching community, the workshop will be offered in both English and Spanish.
The SACPA Board, the Arizona State Veterinarian’s Office, and the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension all believe it is critical that producers and industry professionals are prepared. Knowing what to look for, how to identify potential cases, and how to respond quickly is essential to protecting our herds, our industry, and ultimately our livelihoods.
In addition to classroom presentations, the workshop will include live, hands-on demonstrations to provide practical, real-world training that attendees can take back to their operations.
Please see the attached flyers (available in both English and Spanish) for complete workshop details.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend. Your RSVP is important so we can ensure we have adequate educational materials and meals available for everyone. Space is limited, although we will do our best to accommodate all interested participants.
We strongly encourage cattle producers, ranch managers, veterinarians, industry professionals, and ranch employees to attend. Successfully eliminating New World screwworm requires all of us to work together. The more informed we are, the better prepared we will be to detect, report, and respond to this threat.
This workshop will also provide the latest science-based information and help address some of the misinformation that has been circulating on social media. We want everyone to leave with accurate, up-to-date information and a clear understanding of how we can protect Arizona’s livestock industry.
This workshop would not have been possible without the tremendous support of the Arizona State Veterinarian’s Office and the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. If you have an opportunity to see members of either organization before August 15, please thank them for their partnership. If not, you’ll have the chance to express your appreciation during the workshop.
We hope you will join us on August 15. Please also share this information with fellow producers, ranch employees, veterinarians, and others who may not receive this email. The more people we reach, the better prepared our industry will be.
We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.
Sincerely,
Juan Lopez
